Retail store traffic counters that show how many shoppers you convert

Your register counts the people who bought. A store traffic counter counts everyone who walked in — including the ones who left with nothing. That difference is your conversion rate, and it is the number that tells you whether a slow week was a traffic problem, a staffing problem or a selling problem.

The math

What one point of conversion is worth

Every store’s sales come from three numbers, and a store traffic counter supplies the one your point of sale cannot:

Traffic × Conversion rate × Average sale = Total sales

Start simple. Your store sells $1,000 a day and converts 10% of the people who walk in. Keep the same visitors and the same average sale, and sell to one more person in every hundred who come in: conversion goes from 10% to 11%, and sales go from $1,000 to $1,100. One point of conversion is $100 more, every day you are open — over $30,000 a year for a store open six days a week.

A busier store, same logic: 2,000 visitors a week and a $55 average sale.

Visitors a weekConversion rateTransactionsWeekly sales
Today2,00015%300$16,500
One point better2,00016%320$17,600

That is $1,100 a week, about $57,000 a year, again without one more visitor through the door. A PEARL door counter costs $499.95C$659.95 once. The catch: you cannot manage a number you have never measured. Without traffic, a quiet week and a badly staffed week look the same at the register.

In practice

Four decisions a store traffic counter changes

Who works when

Shoppers per staff member, hour by hour, shows when customers wait and when staff do. Schedules follow real demand instead of habit, and the hours you add go where they sell. One international apparel chain moved its closing ratio from 2% to 7% over three years by adding hours at peak traffic while others cut them.

Whether the marketing worked

Traffic up and sales flat means the campaign brought people in and the store did not convert them. Traffic flat means the campaign did not reach anyone. Two different fixes, invisible in sales alone.

Which stores need help

Compare stores on conversion rate, not just sales. The busiest store is not always the best one, and the quiet store with the best conversion has a manager worth copying.

Whether the storefront pulls people in

A second sensor facing the street or the mall counts passersby; entries divided by passersby is your capture rate — the score for your windows and displays.

New with the Retail plan

A business analyst for your store, in the AI assistant you already use

Big chains have analysts who turn traffic and sales into decisions. Now an independent store or a small chain can have one too. With the Retail plan and up, the SMS Storetraffic T.M.A.S. connector links your store’s traffic, sales and staff data to ChatGPT, Claude and other AI assistants that accept connectors. Ask in plain language, and get answers built on your own numbers — not on averages from someone else’s store.

Ask it anything

How many visitors bought last month? Which hours need one more person on the floor? Is my capture rate improving? Answers come from your own traffic, sales, conversion and staffing in T.M.A.S., with the figures to back them up.

It looks for the why

Sales down on Tuesday? It checks the weather, local events and the people walking past your store that day. Saturday spike? It tells you whether your sidewalk sale did it. Ran a radio ad? It shows whether the campaign brought more people in and paid back its budget.

It forecasts what’s next

Ask it to forecast next month’s traffic and sales with the best model for the job — Prophet, for example, built for data with weekly and yearly patterns — and to include other variables: holidays, your planned promotions, the weather. Then ask what it means for your staffing.

No POS connection? Just tell it

Give your assistant the day’s sales, transactions and items sold, and the hours your staff worked, and it records them in T.M.A.S. for you — after showing you exactly what it will save. Conversion rate and shoppers per staff member follow, with no integration to set up.

Your data, your choice of AI

The connector uses MCP, the open standard AI assistants use to plug into other software. You are not locked into our platform or our AI: use the assistant you prefer, and put your traffic next to your own spreadsheets, calendar and notes.

In your language, wherever you are

Ask in English, French or any other language, from your desk or your phone. Your assistant answers in the language you ask in.

What it looks like · illustrative example

Last Saturday I sold less than the Saturday before. Was it fewer people, or fewer of them buying? And I had Emma and Jo working that day.

Traffic was almost the same: 412 visitors against 405, with similar weather and no local events either day. The difference is conversion: 14% the Saturday before, 11% last Saturday, and the whole drop came between 1 and 4 PM, when 58% of the day’s visitors came in and only two people were on the floor. A third person from 1 to 4 PM would cover the busiest hours. Want me to check the last eight Saturdays to see whether that afternoon gap is a pattern?

How to startChoose the Retail or Real-Time plan, add the SMS Storetraffic T.M.A.S. connector in your AI assistant’s settings, and sign in with your T.M.A.S. account. Your counts, sales and staff hours are then one question away — from your desk or your phone. Running a chain with a data team? The same data still flows to your BI tools through exports and the web API.

Getting started

From box to conversion rate in three steps

1. Install

PEARL sticks to the door frame in under 15 minutes. The 3D Scope II LC mounts on the ceiling with one Ethernet cable and our team calibrates it remotely.

2. Count

The free app shows entries and exits by hour for every counter and location, with alerts if a counter stops reporting.

3. Convert

The Retail plan puts transactions next to traffic — from Shopify, Lightspeed, Square, Heartland Retail, ERPLY, KWI, Furniture Wizard, a file, totals you type in, or simply by telling your AI assistant — and calculates conversion for you.

FAQ

Store traffic counter questions

What does a store traffic counter do?
It counts the people who enter and leave a store, by hour and day. Next to the transactions from the point of sale, it gives the store’s conversion rate, shoppers per staff member, and, with a sensor facing the street or mall, capture rate.
How do I calculate my store’s conversion rate?
Divide transactions by visitors for the same period and multiply by 100. 300 transactions from 2,000 visitors is a 15% conversion rate. The T.M.A.S. Retail plan does it automatically from your POS, from totals you type in, or from the sales you give your AI assistant.
How much does a store traffic counter cost?
PEARL, our wireless door counter, costs $499.95 USD per entrance; the 3D Scope II LC for busy or wide entrances costs $1,149.95 USD per sensor. Both work with a free app at no monthly cost. Conversion rate and POS integration come with the Retail plan, priced per device per month.
Will the counter include my employees?
Counting during business hours removes most staff traffic. For high-ticket stores with few shoppers and several staff, staff filtering on the 3D Scope II LC removes employee crossings using small wearable tags.
Does it work with my point of sale?
The Retail plan connects natively to Shopify, Lightspeed, Square, Heartland Retail, ERPLY, KWI and Furniture Wizard, imports other systems from a file, and accepts totals typed in by hand. If your POS is not on the list, you can also give your daily sales, transactions and staff hours to your AI assistant through the SMS Storetraffic T.M.A.S. connector.
Can I use ChatGPT or Claude with my store’s traffic data?
Yes. With the Retail plan and up, the SMS Storetraffic T.M.A.S. connector links your traffic, sales and staff data to ChatGPT, Claude and other AI assistants that accept connectors. Ask questions in plain language, such as which hours need more staff, whether the weather or a local event explains a slow day, whether a marketing campaign paid back its budget, or ask it to forecast next month with a forecasting model such as Prophet; you can also add sales, transactions and staff hours in the conversation; nothing is saved until you confirm. The connector uses MCP, an open standard, so you choose the assistant and your data is not locked into one platform.
Is it accurate enough to manage by?
Yes, when the counter suits the entrance. PEARL counts upwards of 98% on adults walking through normally, one at a time; the 3D Scope II LC is rated 99%+ on adults with a written 95% minimum for two years. Just as important, both count the same way every day, so this week can be compared with last week.
